In Path of Exile (PoE), “Leagues” are essentially unique game environments that define the rules, challenges, and rewards that players experience. Leagues are divided into two main categories: Permanent Leagues and Temporary Leagues.
- Permanent Leagues: These include the Standard and Hardcore leagues, which persist indefinitely. Characters and items in these leagues are not affected by the introduction of new game mechanics or content, making them the baseline experience in PoE. Standard is for regular gameplay, while Hardcore offers a more challenging experience where character death is permanent, and you are transferred to the Standard league upon death.
- Temporary Leagues: These are introduced with each new expansion, typically lasting about three months. They feature unique mechanics, challenges, and rewards that are not found in the permanent leagues. At the end of a Temporary League, characters and items are transferred to the Standard or Hardcore leagues, depending on the league type.
Each Temporary League provides a fresh start, allowing players to explore new game mechanics, strategies, and interactions, keeping the game dynamic and engaging. Understanding how Leagues work is essential for getting the most out of your PoE experience, whether you’re a new player or a seasoned veteran.
